Should I apply lube?.. wait, that came out wrong.

He asks embarrassedly;

If you’re only neck-sizing cases, do you need to apply case lube? My brain tells me “no”, as my logic is; all you’re doing is squeezing the neck tighter, but I thought I’d ask.

No sense in wasting lube if I don’t have to.

I use Imperial Sizing Wax, even with Ti-Ni coated bushings, just the hint of a wipe is enough.

Accept no substitutes.

+1 to what ovenpaa said, but only on my .303 brass. Never used lube on any of the other calibres I neck size.

Concur with Ovenpaa, if I am using an internal sizing button I apply graphite to the inside of the case necks with a cotton bud.

My recommendation always lube - lightly.

Only my pistol calibres, for which I use my Dillon, are not lubed but they are always squeaky clean

When neck-sizing on a single-stage press I use a tiny amount of Imperial Dry Neck Lube (on the outside only). When I neck size on the progressive I don't lube. Both scenarios are with TiN or other cryo-treated bushings, no expander button and cases tumbled in stainless-steel media.

..

I don't lube for necksizing, becuase I've never had the need, but would inside neck lube in the unlikely event that I ever used an expander plug.

I recommend Hornady Unique lube if you feel the need for lubing it is at least the equal of Imperial at a fraction of the price for more.

I use it for case forming and swaging tasks and it has never let me down.

I always make sure my cases are squeaky clean tumbled before putting them anywhere near a die.

When using a kneck sizing die I coat the inside of the kneck with a light coating of graphite.
I am intrigued by this no expander button thing. Think I might give it a try. I will probably take the button off using a lathe rather than grind it off.
Imperial sizing wax is first class I wouldnt mind trying the Hornady stuff might have to see if I can aquire a couple of tubs.

Thanks all.

I must admit, I do not know any of these terms;

"Ti-Ni coated bushings"

"internal sizing button" Is that the "bulb" on the decapping pin?

Shows how long, and how much I reload :oops:

Dave I either remove the expander decapper spindle altogether and decap separately with a Lyman universal decapping die, or replace the spindle with one from a smaller calibre die set so that it still decaps but that bloody expander doesn't abuse the neck.
