Noticed this in our local classifieds advertised as just Arisaka, no pic or good description. Some guy said he found it in grandpa's closet when his family moved him, did not even know his grandfather owned it. So I sent some e-mails and drove over after work, somebody sold there heritage for $200.00 dollars.

Your looking at an Arisaka Type 99 Kokura series 21 Rifle still retains the aircraft sights, wood and metal look original rifle has a cross struck mum. I have a type of Asian flu I just can't pass up spending my limited funds on these closet Arisaka's.

Yes, that is a anti aircraft sight made for engaging 350 + mph aircraft with a bolt action rifle.
There are no records of anyone actually hitting a moving airplane with one of these, but they sure look cool.
They stopped wasting time and money installing them as the war went on.

I reckon at company level, with everyone having a pop, a la "volley fire", there may have been some merits in the idea against the aircraft of the day.....

Very nice, not many in the UK esp with the AA sights. I think that will be my next find (purchase)
