Grouping with Lee Enfield No 5

What would be an OK group at 100 yards with a Jungle Carbine Lee Enfield, shooting prone, iron sights? I fired one the other day and got about 5 inches with 5 shots.

I know modern rifles with scopes, bipods etc (and better marksmen!) can get a lot tighter, but just wondered what could sensibly be expected from one of these vintage rifles.

It was my first time with this very nice little rifle, so plenty of room for improvement I imagine. Had a bit more recoil than the SMLE but nothing as bad as I'd been led to believe.

I was happy with 5" @100 with my SMLE so 5" from a shorter lighter rifle sounds OK to me and no doubt it could be improved once you got to know the rifle.

I'd say that was pretty good. I had a No5 and despite all the horror stories about then recoiling like cannons and being inaccurate, I found as easy to shoot and accurate as my No4.

I think I enjoyed shooting it more that the No4 actually!

That seems good to me too ! I have an AIA No 5 carbine in 7.62x39: that's rather more accurate but is shooting a much less powerful cartridge of course.

Does seem fair for an original No5, it is worth bearing in mind that acceptable accuracy from a No4 in service was 4" at 100yds.....

I've always liked the idea of that gun.....

Yes, it's our favourite Goblinator (TM) and, with a 30 rnd AK magazine fitted and a second loaded and waiting, excellent for a mad minute...

I bought a replacement rubber butt pad for mine (sounds really dodgy! :o ) off Fleabay of all places, I think the guy was moulding them off the original item in a softer compound, I swapped it out and thought it helped with the recoil.

Love my No.5
