I will be picking up a tub of this later so have had a look at the Alliant web site to see what they recommend:

As can be seen they only list one charge weight and that is high from what I have seen other shooters say they are using, normally in the area of 3.8-4.2 grains.
I am more used to seeing information for rifle data which would list lowest load, highest load and most accurate load.
With having a barrel that is longer than most handguns, I am reluctant to just load with one charge, preferring to step up as normal with a rifle load,

Any thoughts?

Unique in 9mm? Not a cartridge that I found Unique to be the best in. I have shot pounds of the stuff over the years and it's great as a "general" pistol powder that can be used with fair success over a very wide spectrum of cartridges. I still use it in .44 Spl and .32 Mag, but that's it. It is a dirty powder so I don't know how that will affect your LR mech..... (?)

My choice in the day was either Winchester Power Pistol, Hodgdons HP38 or Alliant Blue Dot....

Anyway, my old data has Unique starting at 5.1gns to a max of 5.5gns for 115gn jacketed bullets.

That's all they appear to list for 9mm.

There are other powders, unique doesn't seem to be the best for the nine. (opinion)

If you are committed to unique then you will just have to start low and find your own best load.

Brilliant, just come back from ITL with a tub of Unique to read the above!

It is all testing at this stage of the game so lets see what we can do with it,

Looks like I will be starting at 5.1 and working up to 6.

Re signs of pressure on this blow back rifle, can I still rely on the primers to tell me when things are getting hot?
Anything else to look out for? I assume hard / failing to extract would be a sign something is not right,

Primers, yes. As well as more percieved recoil from a faster rearward bolt movement.

I agree it's a really good powder for pistols. I use it for all my pistols with the exception of her 38 Special, it loves Blue Dot.

for Titegroup. I use it in my 9mm Largo, 357 Mag and from experience it also makes great subsonic rounds for the 223 and 308.

The Alliant link says that they are max loads listed and to reduce by 10% for start loads.

If you're after sub-sonic for the .308 I've made some excellent loads using 10gr of Trail Boss and 150gr lead round nose.

Cheers, but Trail Boss is on my to buy list and I got rid of my 308 for a .45 slot.
