P14 & P17 - is the Action significantly different?

Does the Action differ significantly between the P14 and P17? I know the OAL of the 30-06 is around .230" longer and of course is is rimless but are they similar Actions with respect to the general receiver and bolt dimensions?

As far as I know, the M17 and P14 are the same rifle, just chambered for different cartridges.

As is common knowledge, when the US entered WWI in 1917/18, they didn't have nearly enough Springfield '03s. So They turned to Winchester, Remington and Eddystone, who hitherto to that point had been building P14s for us.

Win, Rem and Eddy turned around and said that we can build you '03s, but you're gonna have to wait while we retool. So the Gumment just went "Sod it" chamber the P14 in .30-06 and be done with it.

Other then head-space, sights, magazine and cartridge, the M17 is indentical to the P14

However, saying that - I'll dig out me books later tonight if you would like and see if I can get some more solid proof.

Forgot that. The bolt face and extractor will be different

The M17 has different finger grooves in its fore-end, too, but that wont affect the bolt O:-)

I ask because someone has asked me to look at building a dedicated cleaning rod for P17 and something else, and closest I have is a P14 to work with, I had a feeling the bolt and receiver were dimensionally going to be very similar but wanted to check.

That's a new one on me. The M1917 and P14 didn't have cleaning rods. At least, not a Mauser-type where it slots underneath the barrel.

David,

I can get hold of a US 17 bolt and eventually action. If you want a specific dimension, PM me?
