Colin R - defunct because the farming got in the way of the club I'm afraid and the owner's son didn't have the time to market it properly.

If you want cheap and cheerful food, take a flask and a box of sammichs. What we have here is a chicken and egg scenario. There are enough people around that decry the existing facilities to make me think that they do need to go upmarket or at least offer a Starbucks type experience alongside a greasy spoon.

Just to be controversial, ALL of the major clubhouse's do food at lunchtime (during the shooting season) and ALL are open to non members. In each of them you can get reasonable food for £5 - £6. Next time you are at Bisley why not have lunch at the Surrey RA or the City RA the LMRA or the Old Sergeants Mess. Have a sandwhich in the North London and sit on the veranda with a pint. Ive never seen the point in travelling to Bisley and then sitting in car or on firing point eating 'sarnies' when hot food is available. Go into the Clubhouses' they wont' ask you to leave. You might just meet some new people and make some very good freinds. Or you can just eat the cr*p that Jenny's sells.

I don't think that's strictly accurate, but you could say that 'most welcome prospective members'.

What's wrong with Jenny's

I suppose if I wanted good food I would not go to a shooting ground to get it. I certainly don't go to Bisley for a dining experience. I will buy food on every visit, but really just to fill in the time between 12.30 and 13.30, especially if its raining, and I certainly don't want to prepare food before I leave and sit in the car eating it. There does seem to be a greasy spoon culture, but good well presented food costs and I wonder how many people will willingly add £20-25 to their day for lunch; probably not enough to make a venture worthwhile I reckon. So the long and short of it is getting the existing vendors to improve their standards and do you think they will do that without a cost implication. Bottom line is that Bisley is about shooting not gourmet eating.

Holy crap man, I don't even pay that for lunch in a decent pub. Or are you speaking about price per couple?

Unfortunately I think you might have hit the nail on the head as I think what puts a lot of people off joining the NRA is the elitist image that it, and shooting at Bisley, can portray. A bit like fox hunting, but when you look under the image you find all sorts of folks who are involved and this is something the NRA should get their PR people onto. Of course there will be those who want to maintain the elite image, but for the NRA to thrive it needs to be attractive to all levels of society. There should be regular consultative meetings with a cross section of members, who will undoubtedly bring new ideas for the management to consider. There is a wealth of commercial and marketing skills, as well as pure common sense, within the membership which could be accessed for free at such meetings. I'm sure many of us would be happy to spare the time to help bolster our NRA.

Depends I guess if you are talking good food or mediocre food. Four of us just had lunch in our local pub, main courses only and water, no booze or coffee, and that was £80 including the tip. If we had gone somewhere else for food such as currently served at Bisley we would have got away with £30-40. You get what you pay for.

A thought that springs to mind , reading the comments on food and travelling.

Is there a legal/constitutional reason for the cessation of shooting for lunch or is it a tradition that has carried on? Would there be a demand for another range hire period for example 10am - 3pm, which would give those with longer journeys a more civilised day out.

In an ideal world it would be handy to be able to book targets and markers in hour multiples to suit. I can see that this may be problematic with regards to markers( though surely not insurmountable)but provision of electronic targets would negate this ( the target pricing sheet on the NRA website shows electronic targets as still being unavailable, is there any likely return for them?)

I realise that this would not be possible on Stickledown, because of access to the butts for markers, but is there any reason it could not be done on century and Siberia?

Cheers phil
