hi guys, with both my 308`s I use Vhit 140. and I like it. In my 223 I currently use 25 grs Varget behind 53grn SMK.
With my version of quickload it does work a favorable load for Vhit 140 for my 223, but in my hand-books Vhit 130 or 135 is
quoted but not 140. I would prefer one powder if possible for both calibres (preferably 140) .anyone here tried it or has any
reason why not.
thanks in advance

thats not the way to look at it Col , work the load up in .3 grain intervals and see with 5 shot group holds the best pattern and stick with that, sometimes the more acurate loads can be the higher charge weights for the powder bullet combo you are using

I agree with Spud, you may see a good accuracy load at low MV however add a couple of grains and you may find something more accurate, as long as you work up with care and recognise the signs of over pressure. A slightly flattened primer is fine, in fact a lot of factory ammunition shows worse on a warm day. Bad signs are cratering around the firing pin indent and heavy bolt lift. At the first sign of heavy bolt lift stop with that load and back off at least half a grain.

The manual doesn't list a load for 53gn bullets with N140. For a 55 FMJBT Hornady bullet it suggests 24.7 to 26.8 - COAL 57.0mm (2.244 inch)

N140 and Varget are too slow for such a light bullet. Try something faster like Benchmark, or maybe a heavier bullet. i run Varget under a 90gr BT fullbore and that works well.

You are going to need around a 1:8 twist to stabalise anything in the 80/90 grain range.
