What goes on in the mind of a sniper?

A young cowboy from Texas who joined the elite US Navy Seals became the most deadly sniper in American history. In a book published this month he provides an unusual insight into the psychology of a soldier who waits, watches and kills.

As US forces surged into Iraq in 2003, Chris Kyle was handed a sniper rifle and told to watch as his marine battalion entered an Iraqi town.
I would assume that there was a wee bit oftraining first.

Over to scotsgun on this one.....

Did you have to?

Too much bullshit and propaganda surrounds the job now. It suffers from the same Walt crap that surrounds the guys in the SAS/SBS, etc. Soldiers kill, the only difference is what tools they use and how they do it, but boasting numbers is just tackless.

I read a thread reply here recently concerning a guys last day at work. How he flew a rescue helo and the difficulties he overcame to accomplish his job. Now theres' a guy to respect and achievements i'd like to hear about; not some loud mouth ex-sniper who shouts his 'count.'

I really wouldn't bother with the book. It'll likely just be another pile of crap, regurgitating the same bollox for the same gullible audiences. We'd bounce such books between us in order to laugh at the crap printed. The only books i've ever been able to read to completion without throwing away in disgust are Carlos Hathcock's -'White Feather', a history type book called 'Out of Nowhere,' and Zeitsev's 'Notes on a Russian Sniper.'

I enjoyed Sniper One by Dan Mills but McNabb... well dross is too kind a term, I would trust nothing 'factual' he has written and I agree his books are at best only fit for toilet paper.

To hyjack the thread some more, the guns of august-barrbara touchman,no mean soldier-peter mcleese, are both excellent reads, but by far and wide the best military story book I ever read was "popski's private army" by. Vladimer peninkoff I think you prenounce it..........also check out "excursion to hell" by vincent bramley about 3 para on longdon, and the devils gaurd is good but its authenticity is questionable about former waffen ss in the french foreign leigion.........the list goes on!
When someone says "it's not about the money" you know what? it probably is all about money!

Peter McAleese is actually a friend of my father's. My mother has a pic somewhere of him bouncing me on his knee. He immediately made my mother's s*** list by calling me a 'fat little f***!' Not the best way to describe a mother's baby

Bramley's book has a liberal dose of bullshit in it too. Anyone wanting to know about Mt Longdon or how bad the Falklands was just has to bring my father a decent bottle of whisky and get settled on a comfortable seat.

Got to agree with the Badger; McNab and Ryan's books are complete and utter bollox - Bravo Two Zero in particular.
