Didn't look like that when I was there in the early 80's.

Back then I was a big 6' 5" Geordie (well Mackem!) and nothing really ever bothered me but Auschwitz certainly affected me badly, only the second time I've ever felt like that.

When I was about 8 or 9 (so early 60s) my mum used to cook an extra Sundays dinner every week for a chap down our street, I can remember going with her to deliver it and will never forget him, I later found out from my mum that he'd been one of the first British troops to enter Bergen-Belsen. he'd never recovered from the horror of what he saw there. Even to this day I can remember looking into his eyes and just seeing nothing, scared me quite a bit.

I have not visited any of the camps and I am not sure I could bring myself to do if I was given the chance. I know Christel has and she says she can remember the silence.

Maybe it is an age things but some things move me more a lot these days that they ever did. War Graves are one example

I am very interested in post WW1 and WW2 history so I have visited a few KZ's.
I found Sachsenhausen one of the most interesting as it is located right in the midle of a nice Berlin greater surburbs giving it a difficult to explain "hell in middle of nice" feeling that the other camps built usually in secluded places dont have. It is also fascinating as it was not closed after the mai 45 capitulation and went on as a concentration camp for the NKVD and the Soviet untill 1950. The benefit is that nearly everything you can see there are the actual buildings not reconstructions as it is the case in many other camps. Take my word for it it, after a party night in Berlin's clubs , it is a very sobering experience ...

This little lot out of Bergen-Belsen is coming up for auction soon. I would be very suprised if it doesnt make much much more.

Roman Halter
Roman Halter, who has died aged 84, was a Holocaust survivor and turned in middle age to depicting, on canvas and in stained glass, the anguished faces he had seen going to their deaths when he was just 12 years old.

Halter’s autobiography, Roman’s Journey, A Memoir of Survival, was published in 2007.
