K98's

Hello,
Does anyone know of any good reference sources for the K98 Mauser? I have just put in a variation for one and would like to learn a bit about the differences between the various manufacturers between 39-45. The one that I have put a deposit on does not have the cleaning rod or the bayonet fitting under the muzzle (the only one that I have seen like this-1944 model)
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I cannot point to anything online, but some of the best info I've got is from a book:

Military Mausers of the World. By: Robert W. D. Ball

You can find it on Amazon from about £19.99 - £35.00

But it is an awesome reference guild to anything Mauser. I've got a copy, but I think it's been reprinted, again, since I bought my copy.

Regards
T

Salut,

Which year is your K98 dated ?
If it is german production it sounds like it is a Kriegsmodell which appears lat 44.
a 45 dated one would be very nice from a collector's point of view :good:

Whermacht-awards.com is a general forum about german militaria where there is highly knowledgeable members about the variations of the K98

surplusrifleforum.com is usually a good place to go.

Sounds like a Kreigsmodell though, however this variation is occasionally seen in Russian Captured models

Oh yeah, I forgot about them. Shame on me, considering I'm a member  ;)

Great guys, I can vouch for them. I'm off to see them soon :shakeshout:

The capture models are easily spotted by the colour and the electro pencil on the bolt however this can be scrubbed out, and the wood restored to something more original which means unless you take care you could be buying something that is not all it should be.
Why are Kar98's so expensive over here and why do we never see the good ones? I was shooting with some Germans last year with Kar98 snipers and they were stunning rifles in comparison to what I see over here...

thanks for all the input so far.
It is a nice blonde laminate and has matching serial #'s (from memory!) Didn't all the Russian capture 98's have an X stamped on the receiver? This one doesn't.
