Wasn't this the action that was covered in the recent TV series when they interviewed veterans from all of the allies that had fought from D Day until VE Day. Can't remember the name I'm afraid.
The temptation would have just been to surrender but these guys decided that they would fight and die instead. Very brave.

it could be Band of Brothers ?
