I fancy making a knife...
First one will be buy a preformed blade and then make my own handle to see how I get on. Does anyone on the forum make such things and where is the best place to source a blade? Come to think of it what would be a good style of first knife to make?

Have you looked at British Blades? Loads of info on there, and and some of the makers sell blades or kits.

I occassionally make blades for friends and family. I source the blades from old files or cut from old circular saw blades (large table saw type).
I make the scales from horn, deer antler or laminate wood.

We had an old chap at work who used to make bowie knife blades from discarded files, the blades themselves were very good.

We have "customers" who can make "blades" from toothbrushes - or most nearly anything else you care to leave in their cell - but that does not help you much,

I have neither the facilities nor the desire to make blades right now and I am fairly confident I can do a reasonable job of a handle and even a sheath, and it is fun to learn like this as well.

I was in Henry Kranks just before Christmas and he had quite a good display of just the blades. Don't now if they were good or not as it isn't my thing (quite expensive though). I do remember Ray Mears making a knife by alternating discs of wood, horn, leather etc.; looked very effective. Yertiz:
