I've been waiting for this to happen, ever since I took the Canadian Firearms Test in 2008. I think in the New Year I'll send off the rest of the paperwork and get my Possession and Acquisition License.

Do you also need authority to transport, still? And is that still only valid for the province in which it's issued?

The PAL I would get is for non-restricted firearms and it's valid Canada wide as it administrated by the RCMP and it's a Federal Act. Authority to transport is only for resticted firearms. A hunting licence is only valid for the province it is issued.

But will a PAL still be necessary if the long gun registry is scrapped?

In short, yes I believe so. I don't know the full details but there was a licencing system in place before the requirement register long guns came into force. I assume a PAL (in some shape or form) will be required at the very least for non residents.
