Sad day today

#1 Post by alan108 »

I've just got back from possibly my last days shooting on one of my permissions.
For the last 4 years i've had permission to shoot over 18 acres of mature woodland, mostly sweet chestnut (for copesing)sp?,but, with plenty of mature trees, and plenty of squirrels, and wood pigeon, which I control with shotgun.
When I first started shooting this land it was air rifle and shotgun only, but with the owners permission I applied for and got use of .22r/f (for rabbits) at first, then I found that there were a lot of fox there as well,so the permission was granted for a .22c/f (hornet).
When the snow was on the ground earlier this year,we found some deer tracks as well.
The owner has had the land up for sale for a few months, and has managed a sale, the change-over day is Wednesday 14th December 2011.
I don't know who the new owners are,or if they will want me to carry on with 'pest control'.The present owner has said he will ask.
I would hate to lose this permission as it's a mile from home and takes under 5 mins by car,it's so easy to spend a couple of hours or so out there.

Alan

Hope the new owner is sensible and lets your shooting continue. He would be foolish to do otherwise unless he wants the ground for his own sport. I trust the last owner will give you a good reference to the new owner.

The present owner has said he will give me a good reference. The squirrels need controlling as they 'ringbark' the new trees killing them,at the moment, there is 700 tons of wood ready for cutting, and if the new stock doesn't grow then nothing in a few years times left to cut.
Fingers crossed,eh?

Fingers crossed Alan, at least the present land owner can give you a good reference and if there was a problem for the old landowner the problem will still exist when the new one takes over.

If the new owner lives local take a bottle of Groose around one Saturday morning without your guns...in your Sunday best shooting attire.

Good luck.

Perhaps a polite letter to the new owner introducing yourself and offering to call and introduce yourself personally?
