Hi All ...
Just bought a .410 for my daughter ... the ammo as well all know is expensive ..
So ... reloading .410 ... bear in mind ive only ever watched someone reloading pistol ammo in the dim distant past !!
What will i need ?.. what should i read ? how much will it cost to get started ?

Hopefully someone will be along in a bit with a 'proper' answer. I have only loaded 12 gauge however I would hope it was similar in principle.

You need some empty cases so start saving what you shoot even if they cannot be used you can practice with them, in my day Winchester was the case to use if you could find them.

You need some powder and primers, I still have loads of shotgun primers but they are not the sort of thing I can post out. You also meed some shot and wads, I used plastic but fibre is environmentally kinder, you also need some shot (you can make you own but don’t even think about it yet!) I am not sure what is legal shot wise these days and it is very dependant on what and where you shoot.

You need to eject the old primer and straighten the case out
Insert a new primer
Measure some powder into the case.
Add the wadding
Measure some shot in
Roll the end of the case over (Not as easy as it sounds)
Shoot em!

You can either use a multi-stage press or hand tools. I uses a multi stage press that performed all of the stages with the pull of the handle so you just kept adding the bits such as powder, wad and shot and every stroke of the press took you a stage closer until all of a sudden you had finished cartridges dropping off the end.

Yeah right......
I found rolling the end of the case (closing it) far from easy and used to drop a piece of card on top of the shot other wise it would fall out of the tiny hole in the end.

I shoot the 410 quite a bit and the only time I crossed over to reloading for it was when I was making slug loads. I tend to buy in bulk, which keeps the price down. It all depends on how much, brand etc, but I pay between £6 and £8 a box of 25.

However, having said all that, next year I going to be homeloading some buckshot shells for the 410 - just for experimentation! :lol:

What a lovely old press, looks a lot more robust than the one I had.

the operater is not so robust i am afraid but then he is 73
