The cost of actions

Like many before me and many that will come after me, I ended up using a Remington action for my rifle build basically because it was cheaper to buy a whole Remington 700 than it was to buy a custom made action in the UK.

Although unable to pay the best part of £1000 for an action alone, I came to accept that because of the engineering costs, that was the price that had to be paid.

Then last night it hit me, how can I buy my SGC 9mm with all that special tooling, calibre specific parts and relatively small UK market for not much more?

You can not tell me that it takes more time/material or parts to put an action together than the 9mm.

Strange,

DM

I have often had very similar thoughts about action costs but my experiences with making wood furniture shows that the amount of raw material 'waste' between rough plank and finished product PLUS design work & refinements PLUS labour PLUS finishing materials and time really do add up an amazing amount of 'invisible' cost that the end-customer never sees and so finds hard to appreciate ..... and therefore I can see how we end up with high costs even before we look at any commercial 'mark-ups' .

I too wish they were cheaper but only gunsmiths like Valkyrie Rifles (Baldie Dave) and others are really qualified to talk about engineering costs and tooling and R&D costs ....I guess that we expect flawless products and have to be prepared to pay for what goes with that.
