RG 7.62 ammunition 90 issue

#1 Post by GDR1 »

I was just wondering if anybody else has had a similar experience to me.

When I was in Germany I bought an original crate of 1000 rounds.
The crate was delivered in the same condition it left the factory all those years ago. they were in 20 rd boxes, packed in sealed bags of 200, 5 0f which were in the wooden crate.(This took me back to my SLR days!!!)

I'd got through quite a few of these, however when I was on a German civillian range I had an odd experience.
I'd fired about 40/50 shots that day and the next shot was just a pop. I Waited 30ish seconds and unloaded. The round came out complete, minus primer which was separate.I pulled the head and the powder was still intact. On checking the case I discovered there were no flash holes.

Once I got home I pulled a few more heads to check them but they were fine.
My Enfield which I was using when it originally happened showed no signs of gas burning, however i'm dubious about putting them through my newer rifle.

I was curious as to wether anybody else has had any similar experiences with RG ammo

regards
Gordon

I have heard of missing flash holes when a punch has broken (7,62x54R something) but not in RG. My view is this truly going to be a one in a million thing and apart from the annoyance of having to clear the round and empty the primer out you should be fine. I would say keep shooting them.

OK , for the sake of arguments / Purists , the rifle in question was a Parker-Hale T4 in 7.62mm. As most people know these were built on a No4 Mk2 reciever and bolt, rebarreled and stocked. Thats why I said it was an Enfield

I've seen a round of 7.62 ball, fresh out of the box with no primer fitted. This was however a later batch.

I've seen Radway's quality system so this will be a one in a million issue. I have seen some boxes of Privi where the quality failure ratio was one in ten!

Back in the 90s RG Quality control was deemed to be a joke. Shooting Target Ammunition in the NRA Meeting was always a lottery as to wether the ammunition would hold an acceptable group or even hold a group. Many shooters had 'flyers' that could not be attributed to the shooter or rifle but we just had to put up with it as the ammunition was part of the MOD/NRA range time deal. Green Spot or black spot was generally considered only just fit for purpose. Many instances of 'click', wait 30 secs unload and get another round from the RCO. As to the causes of the 'click', at the time we could only guess as the ammunition was returned to MOD. Things did improve when we went to the 155 bullet with some batches of really exceptionally good ammunition but also some that were absolute crap.
I do recall shooting in Queens 2 at 300yds happily knocking the centre of the V bull out to have a shot go at 6 o'clock in the magpie. My register keeper told me that the bullet had gone in sideways! After the next shot was scored, you could see a row of three patches where my shot had been marked. This was quite off putting. Other shooters had been saying that they had been having 'odd' shots all week. With the 144 ammunition it was always a lottery. Thank god we now have consistantly good ammunition in RUAG.
