I've been practicing my limited wood skills on my old side by side (that's not worth a bean anyhow) it's on its 10th coat of napier oil now,trying to achieve a London best ish finish any tips or hints on this,the coats are taking 5 days to dry now but it's does not seem to dry shiny shiny yet

When I go for a shiny finish, which is rare, I use 50/50 pure linseed oil, not boiled, and white spirit buffed up 'tween coats with denim wrapped on a buffing wheel in the cordless drill. The heat from the friction seems to help rather than just going the hand rub way.

The diluted oil usually takes overnight/24 hours to dry tween coats, sheen is dependant upon buffing, buffing and buffing, 'tis nary a quick job, but 5 days to dry 'tween coats will make it forever.

No Idea what Napier oil is but it definitely doesn't sound fit for purpose.

All oils like heat to help seep into the wood and dry so maybe letting it dry of in an airing cupboard would speed it up.

With the linseed I find many thin layers the way to go, seeps into the wood well and dries overnight. A month doing it every day will give a glass like lustre.

I go for a satin lustre look using Danish oil on my re-finish projects " Sorry I find the glossy gloss look a bit yucky its like French polishing a rifle stock " its just my opinion. I Won`t go into my details as everybody has their own methods, to give you and idea of the finishes have a look on you-tube.
