Can anybody recommend a good bore cleaner, i recently bought an early production Savage No4 mk1 with 2 groove rifling its in very nice condition but i thought i would give the barrel a goid clean, i have Butchs Bore Shine, Sweets 7.62 and Hoppes Benchrest no9 the only one that seem to do anything is the Sweets and the amount of blue/black crud thats coming out is not normal, i must be the first person to clean it since 1942, I dont like using bronze brushes but have been using nylon brushes and leaving it to soak for 30 minutes before mopping it out.
I understand all these cleaners have an ammonia content which is not ideal but they seem to be the only stuff shifting the crud, i had a packet of 100 cotten patches but i must have used 3/4 of them now and there still coming out dirty.
Been told to try KG12 but not sure if this is any better or safer than what i have already.

I find C2R bore cleaner pulls crud from bores even after other cleaners stop working.

There is no ammonia in C2R even though it smells as if it has, you don't need brushes just patches.

I'm using C2R with good results - not sure if it's still available or who stocks it.

Butches Bore Shine for carbon removal and Sweets for copper (leave it 15 mins to act and repeat til no blue on patch) - but you must use a bronze brush (for carbon removal) - keep nylon brushes for your teeth.

BoreTech Cu+2 is a great copper solvent that does not contain ammonia. Avoid using any brass fittings when removing copper, as they will give a false indication. Agree that a Phosphor Bronze brush in good condition is required for general cleaning, but more stubborn carbon will require a mild abrasive such as JB Bore Paste. Finally, without a bore-scope you are cleaning blind, and now that cheap digital bore-scopes are available there is no reason not to have one.

Thanks for the comments, I will have go try some C2R not a big fan of bronze brushes but looks like i will have to have a go with one, theres that much crud coming out its not normal, never had a barrel this dirty before.

I’ve always used Wipeout & Accelerator in my 5.56 AR which has minimum of 100 rounds every time it’s cleaned. Patch first soaked in accelerator, then nylon brush soaked in Wipeout, leave for at least 30 mins then patch out. Continue until patch comes out light grey. Works for me.

This is similar to the borescope I use - Teslong. Gives excellent results when plugged into my phone, tablet or laptop. Make sure you get one with a side view mirror and down to .22 if you shoot small stuff.

My Teslong was under £75 when I bought it a few years ago; more now, I'm sure. It has been an excellent tool for assessing cleaning (and identifying flaws etc)...
