Google it. You'll find it's often used as a cleaner/de-greaser.

I used acetone as I have a gallon/5litre bottle of the stuff. White spirit is OK if you are painting the house but not really suitable for degreasing metal for spray paint as it isn't oil based.
Never argue with an idiot, he will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
