Without proof

#1 Post by lovemunkey187 »

How unrecommended/dangerous is it to use steel shot shells in a shotgun that has no proof mark/fleur de lis etc?

I did a little googling and there seems to be a couple of main camps.
  • 1. Don't do it. Ever. At all.
    2. Have at it. It'll be fine.
I assume that a lot of older guns it is a terrible idea, but would it be ok with a shotgun that is newer i.e.<20 years old?

“Steel proof” I believe is different from the required proof marks in the U.K. in that a gun proofed fit fit steel is done so at the factory to confirm that internal bore diameters are suitable, as opposed to having the vandals in Birmingham and London bang a structurally weakening cartridge through a new gun…
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

I have a nice old side-by-side hammergun and at the moment and I use 24grm cartridges through it. Wonder if I'll be able to get 24grm in steel ???
