Hello, someone I know is about to move into a static caravan while house-hunting. He is aware that it may be possible to secure his existing gun cabinets through the floor of the static into the chassis, however as a possible alternative he has workshop premises inside which there is a concrete blockwork room. The premises are not occupied at night but have barred windows and an alarm system and he is wondering if he were to fit a steel door on the room, with the safes bolted securely inside, would that be more secure. There are many questions but of course the first is - would this be acceptable to his FLO and second, has anyone done this before. It seems that an RFD with a retail shop would have similar requirements?

He is aware that the only real answer to whether this would be acceptable to his FLO is to ask them directly, however it would be interesting to hear views, experiences and general advice from the membership here. Thanks in advance.

My opinion - if I was in this situation I'd transfer the guns over to someone else till I got my new house sorted out. Or an RFD will store then for £2 a week per gun I think it was last time I looked.
If he wants to go ahead and keep them then it really is the opinion of the FEO that matters.

Common sense would tell you one thing, but as we know, there is little room for common sense in firearms law.

I would say run it by his FEO in the first instance.

Unoccupied premises, barred and alarmed - just describes most gun shops for the majority of the time.

The added bonus here is that generally no one will know there are guns stored in the building.

An RFD would likely have a proper monitored alarm though?

I know a chap who lives on a houseboat and his FEO ok'd keeping his gun cabinet 'aboard'. Not sure but would think a secure cabinet fixed to the chassis of a static caravan would be ok. If I remember correctly the standard for a cabinet is to withstand a 5 minute 'attack' with non-power tools.

Are our houses always occupied 24/7 ? What about if you go away for a night or two ?

Assuming the workshop isn't a single building/property in the middle of nowhere with no one else overlooking it then as others have said there's comparisons to be made between a dwelling or business premises that isn't occupied 24/7. I would have thought a monitored alarm would be on the FEO's 'need' list though.
