6.5x47 barrel length

I need another 6.5x47 rifle for stuff. Nothing over 300 yards most of the time and with a 123 grain bullet. I would normally opt for a 24-26" barrel however as it is only 300 yards ish I was thinking of 20" - Does anyone have any views on shorter barrels and the 6.5x47 Lapua?

It will mostly be shot with a sound moderator.

I really can't see a problem with that - you will lose, maybe, 100 or so fps, but accuracy shouldn't be effected and you will have a more practical rifle. If you were trying to stretch the range to 1,000yds it would be a different story.

I shoot a 20inch barrel 260 remington using 108 gn scenars at 600 regularly.
I have no doubt it would perform well at 900 too.
I have used it a couple of times on 300yd McQueens.
Not much difference between the 260 and 6.5 x47

Once that bullet has left the barrel there is absolutely no difference, same for all 6.5s other than the 6.5CM which seems to defy both logic and accepted external ballistic principles :)

Would be interested in this also. My 6.5x47 Lapua has a 28" barrel and I've often thought about chopping it down.

I have decided on 20" with a Nielsen reflex sound moderator to keep the overall length down. The rifle is an S&L ML97 Sporter so pretty much unique already.

I think just blinkers and a better PR team working on it. :good:
