Picking Your Brains

#1 Post by Christel »

I saw an aeroplane today...

Thing is I have no idea what I saw.

It had three engines, so propeller on the nose and one on either side.

It was blackish. With a funny tail. Old fashioned looking. Smallish.

Yeah I know... any????

Stinson Tri-Motor, Ford Tri-Motor, JU-52......might be worth doing an image search for 3 engined propeller aircraft and see if you can identify it that way.....

I have searched, all sorts of key words. Nothing.

Is there such a place where I can ask what flew over Binbrook today around 15.30?

I do not know a lot about planes. When I first spotted it I thought it was one of those surveillance planes with the big disc on the top however this one did not have the disc. Similar shape, similar tail, smallish, dark, with three propellers. We have a lot of Typhoons going over, nothing like that, sounded more like a Spitfire.

When I searched for those key words I got planes that do not even exist or definitely do not fly here.

I've just run playback on Flightradar24 and didn't find anything other than normal stuff in your area. What do mean you haven't got the Flightradar24 app on your phone ?

We used to - both our iphones died a death a few weeks back. Both running Androids now. Another app to add :)

Thank you for looking, pretty sure FR24 only shows civilian?

FR24 seems to show selected military traffic usually training flights, on the playback I saw Typhoon, a couple of Hawks and Red Arrow in your general area. FR24 has been showing RAF Voyagers, C17's, A400M's and the odd C130.

For better military coverage I'm running this on a laptop https://globe.adsbexchange.com/ and the equivalent app on the phone
