Tikka T3 bolt problem

I was on the range today shooting my 6,5x55 Swede T3 when the shroud came off of the rear of the bolt followed by the bolt coming apart.
Anybody else had this happen or know of the problem?
The shroud looks ok but I am getting an aluminium one and the assembly tool off of the Evil bay.

Coming apart?? What came off it exactly?

Hi Pete.
I fired a shot and the shroud flew back and wacked me in the face!
I took another shot and the bolt fell apart - nothing flying about thankfully!

I'm glad you are okay but the shroud and bolt events are a bit worrying!

Did any component actually break, or just disassemble? I just took the shroud off my M595, which I think is almost identical to the T3, and there's no way it can come apart unless metal actually fractures somewhere. I have seen a Tikka bolt with one lug broken off...............

Can you post a pic of the bits of the bolt?

If the bolt shroud "flew back", it must have been blown off by gas venting back through the firing pin channel. Was the primer blown or blanked?

If so, why did you risk your safety by taking another shot?

What Stan just said............I've had primers blow on a Tikka, and what usually happens is that a bit of the primer anvil gets blown in through the firing pin hole which can cause the pin to jam so you just get a click if you try to fire another round.
Then if the pin frees itself when the bolt lugs are disengaged as you unload, you could have a pipe bomb going off next to your face.............and the bod next to you on the same side as your ejection port, plus anyone immediately behind you wouldn't be too delighted, either.

Examination of the fired rounds has indicated a primer problem.
I used CCI primers and examination of the ones fired at that session showed everything from and ok (not flattened) majority to a couple of flattened and one pierced.
The ammo was loaded over the last couple of days using some three batches of CCI primers I had around of various ages.
It would seem that the primer cups are of varying quality materials which would account for the condition after firing.

Thank you for the lecture above by the way. Most helpful, I'm sure!

The plastic shroud is a known item which can break. When I had mine I bought an aluminium shroud on ebay from Atlas Worx based in Australia. Good piece of kit.

I've bought one on the EvilBay - should be here in a day or two
