Mauser "Sniper" rifles...any good, how accurate ?????
Back to my theme of aging eyes really....I can shoot very nice groups with my Mosin Nagant sniper, even at long range, but how well does the Mauser shoot ?
I have seen a few recently and although fairly expensive when compared to the Mosin Nagant snipers are nothing like as expensive as a No4T, but I wonder if they are really all "show and not much go"..
Anyone with experience of these...???

Dirtbag is the resident Kar98 sniper man and has been shooting to 1000+ with them for a good while. Rifleman also has one and knows how to shoot so his views on them would be good as well. My experience is limited however I have found the Kar98 surprisingly accurate out to 1000 even with open sights. It is all down to how good the rifle is really, get a nice bore and reasonable ammunition and you should be able to get to 2MOA at longer distances.
Without a doubt the most accurate of these era sniper rifles seems to be the Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55 Ex-skydiver on here has put 10 shots in a 2p piece sized marker at 100.
Our old MN PE Sniper would manage 3 shots in a 2p group at 100 yards, sadly the 4/5th would never come in. It was certainly more accurate than my 4(T) is at shorter distances.

Hi,
I also have a Mauser K98 sniper in 7.92. These over the last year or so started to show higher prices. There are alot of made up ones on the market so knowledge about them is needed before you shell out over £1500 for one. Mine shoots very well, and at present only tested at 300yds max, I put 20 rounds in a very tight group all touching. I have a mosin sniper and the mauser out shoots it IMO because of better optics..
Some Mausers have been re-barreled to 7.62x51...

Targetman, If you are near Bisley on the 10th Sept, S/S 100yds, you are more than welcome to come, and try my rifle....
Re: Mauser "Sniper" rifles...any good, how accurate ?????
Thanks for the replies guys....looks hopefull.
Appreciate the comments about made up examples, it is just like the Mosin Nagants really and, increasingly, No4Ts.
I had a Nagant with a PU scope many years ago when the were really dirt cheap, could not hit the proverbial barn door with it until I had stripped it down, bedded it, mounted the scope properly (it was way out) and then it shot like a dream, especially with handloads. Trigger was always crap though. Present one with a PE scope is spot on.
BNZ41....thanks for the invite but will be unable to get to Bisley any weekends for some time, my sister in Devon has had a massive stroke and we are visiting her each weekend for the forseeable........
"BNZ41" presumably refers to Steyr-Daimler-Puch or Steyr-Oberdonau and the Z41 "marksmans" scope.....?
If so, how does the ZF41 compare to the more standard scope set-up?

Hi Targetman.
Sorry to hear about your sister, fingers crossed for her.
BNZ41 is the Steyr-Daimler-Puch, and the 41 is the year 1941. Mine is fitted with a 1920's Zeiss sniper scope, same Reticle as the PU scope. (not the marksman) bnz did not make them, with the ZF41 long eye relief scope.
Offer still stands whenever you get time...

Shoot good !
Without sounding like a shameful plug, I have videos of my Low turret K98 with 6x Zeiss Zielsech at 600 yards grouping with different ammo , shoots fine.
And at Barton from 1000 I have "had good days" and some not so good. When you are shooting to next guys with newer target guns you sometimes have to step back and ask have I done what the rifle was designed to do, most of the time it is yes. If you want one for history and to accept that it will probably wont outshoot your mate with an AI, then they are great, go for it , as BNZ said be careful on what you put your money down on.
As for the ZF41 Sharpshooter , I actually have one on its way to me, an K98 AR 42 with JVE marked Type 1 Zf41 scope and mount with inspection stamp. But going by the 1.bowl and the small sight picture they are not really "sniper guns" and I would not try it at 1000 (Although I may one day :>) But 100 - 300 / 600 I would guess okay for getting in the black at least, depends how good you are
