Out of interest, how many bullets of a suitable type do you use for load development before you bin it and move to a different type?

I tried 3 different bullet weights, each with 3 different powder loadings, testing 3 groups of 5 rounds each before I chose my load. Would have preferred shooting more groups but it was getting expensive enough and I was just after a plinking round (in .223)

Is that 45 rounds of each bullet over three batches/loadings? Is that enough to get any reasonable data?

How many are you looking for of each bullet weight in your taster pack? If you only shoot the 45 you could get together with someone and buy a 100 bullet pack and split them. Probably work out cheaper than getting someone to break down the boxes into smaller packs.

Enough for me for a plinking round that's rarely going to see more than 300m.

Have taken it out to 600m on an ETR range a couple of times though and it got the job done.

I don't compete with fullbore rifles and if I did ever managed to get my backside in gear to go down to Bisley I'd be shooting IPSC type targets with 15x30cm 'A' zone...

Fair enough, you could just make up the last half of the pack and still knock over the ETR targets with them.
Might be cheaper than getting someone to break several boxes in half to make up the taster pack and have the worry of selling the remaining part packs.

Better for the shooter to not have to buy 100 rounds of something that groups like a shotgun and do that several times before finding their guns preference, and ending up with a ton of lead that they have a far smaller market to sell to. If a dealer wants to provide the service then more power to them as far as i'm concerned

Looking in a 20 year old Gunmart, SMKs were 15 quid a hundred and Hodgdon powder 17 a tub. CCI primers were 15 quid a thousand! Oooh, just imagine.... no wonder we ended up with part boxes and part tubs of all sorts of types and brands! There was always someone who had a part bid of something you wanted to try..
