I shot the UKPSA PCC match with the Rossi last month and this has set me thinking, in my ignorance, that maybe a.410 shotgun could be used with slug ammo for this kind of short range target shooting on an indoor range.

In my mind this would only really work if .410 can be loaded like .38 Specials, in brass cases with cast bullets and a crimp to hold them in place.

Some reading has revealed a host of brass cases that will chamber in a .410 in lengths from 1 to 3 inches.

I've decided it's not really worth the effort but I'm still curious.
The main objections seem to be -
- the lower chamber pressure rating for the .410 but I would think this could be overcome by suitable handloading.
- the problem with full chokes in .410 barrels but I would use a cylinder choke.

Can someone more knowledgeable about such matters put me straight as to the ballistic reasoning why I can't or shouldn't for example load a .41 cast bullet in a suitable brass case with a suitable powder charge and fire it in a .410 shotgun.

I know people have used .303 cases before and cast there own slug. But thats all i know!!!

Although it's over the minimum case and bullet dimensions, it doesn't fit within an allowed calibre for PCC.

APPENDIX D: Pistol Caliber Carbine Division PCC

Permitted calibers: 9 mm (0.354") / 19 mm (0.748") 9x19 mm, 9x21 mm, .357 SIG, .38 Super, .38 Super Comp, .40 S&W, .45 ACP

On top of that it will be under weight and too fast at 88gr (115gr min.) And 1800ish fps (1640fps max) for standard .410 slug loads.

No doubt someone will be aware of other loads, but then I don't shoot .410 slug.

What's the point when you can get a 38spl (or 44spl) but with the added benefit of rifling?

.410 saiga semi auto with box mags would be my assumption. Would be quicker than a lever action.

The benefit of that I can see.

Box fed .410's are available. The Web Tac is currently advertised in .410 in the UK and .410 box feds are popular in Turkey where most box feds come from.
I know PCC isn't intended to be shot with a .410 but you could argue that a box fed .410 is the closest thing we can use in the UK. We would be able to roughly compete with the rest of world. The list of approved calibres precludes .44 as well but rules can be changed.

The biggest problem for paper/card target shooting in my mind is the wad from a shotshell that often leaves a second big hole in the target. Usually easy to identify but still not ideal and if indoors time would need to be spent clearing up wads. Outdoors fibre wads could work but the extra holes could be more of a problem.
The only way I could see it working is if .410 slug could be loaded without a wad.
