I have been asked how many firearms can you as an individual own?
He was told that anymore than 12 is classed as an armoury

I'd say as many as you can store securely and can show good reason for, I can think of one member of my club that has 40+ and isn't a RFD.

As well as my own rifles I also store club rifles and have been approved for up to 24 which is the capacity of my cabinets. I’m pretty sure if I installed another cabinet and asked for another home visit to inspect it I would be able to store more.

If you collect stamps, you can have them by the album.
If you collect toffee wrappers, you can have them by the bucketful.
Why should firearms be any different? If you are judged fit to own one, why not two ? Or three? Or ...

A friend of mine has fifty plus and he’s also not an RFD.

+1

Some forces have arbitrary 'limits' before you have to upgrade security but I've never heard of anyone being refused another gun because they aren't an 'armoury'/RFD.

And that means what?

Most likely only improved security. Some would say any room that stores one or more firearms is and 'armoury'.

I know some small RFDs that store firearms in their house in cabinets and some FAC holders who have walk in secure rooms in out buildings.

How many? I agree, it is down to how many you can justify AND store securely. The FEO may impose conditions based on the local firearms department interpretation of HO reconsiderations.
