For me the blade is essential. First shoot of the year a beaters Spaniel came charging out of the woods straight into an old pigeon hide formed from heavy duty (6mm+ dia) nylon netting and became completely entangled. The Wingman did the job of cutting through the net in several places very nicely, something that could never have been accomplished with scissors.

I retired my S&W locker 10 years ago because it was not socially acceptable to carry such a knife, regardless of just how useful it was. So it is quite nice to have a multi tool these days, regardless of the legality. I am just mindful of where I take it.

My main tool is a black Leatherman Wave, however I also have a couple of Gerber Suspension dotted around. One has a snapped saw blade and the scissor spring is knackered too. The other Gerber Suspension has issues with the lock button due to sand ingress. The Leatherman Wave suffered much less from a desert environment.

The Wave is the significantly better of the two.

SAK Huntsman and Leatherman T4 Free for EDC.

Leatherman Micra, Squirt and Boker Mini Tech City on various keyrings

Leatherman Charge TTi in toolkit

Leatherman MUT in gunbag

These things are addictive :-) In general I find the Leathermans are more robust, but the SAK packs more into a smaller space.

How well does the blade stay in place now?

I put a washer in to make it harder to open and close, it was a bit "floppy" before that.

I separated knife and tool, not because I don't need a knife, bit because something like a spydie ukpk is much safer to use than any other non locking blade, without bringing any issues that a locker has. The fact I never have to worry about justifying is presence either. I don't trust back sprung blades with the same confidence as a good choil
