Subsonic plinking ammunition

Hi all

I normally buy Blazer or similar for plinking sessions but just out of curiosity I want to try some subsonics.

Looking at prices though, it appears subs are quite a bit more expensive than what I'm used to paying (about £70 / 1000 for Blazer).

Does anyone have a recommendation for bulk buy (1000) budget / plonking subs?

Cheers

Blazer is particularly cheap ammo, at least going by my club's prices. I think you'll pay more for most other brands, subsonic or not. That said, CCI Standard (1070 FPS) comes in around £80/1000 at my club which isn't much more and is decent, clean subsonic ammo, although it is not specifically branded as subsonic. I also use CCI subsonic hollow points (slightly slower, 1050 FPS), I buy the 100 packs for about £9, they run well in my semi-autos unlike some subsonics. When I'm using single-shot rifles, I use CCI Quiet 22, which is indeed very quiet at only 710 FPS, but is a bit more expensive, £4.50 a box of 50. Again, these are local prices for me and I'm sure they'll differ in your area/club. I think a bulk buy of CCI Standard is your best bet.

Standard velocity stuff at around 1080fps is actually sub-sonic anyway. Most subs in the UK are undoubtedly HP, so you’ll pay a premium for them. Likewise, there were some Winchester solid truncated cone that were about but they were expensive as well. CCI Quiet were very quiet and around 700 fps, but again, being a break from the norm pricey.

The most quirkiest stuff was Aguilla SSS (sub sonic sniper) had a 60gn bullet loaded to LR length on a .22 short case!

Thanks for the replies.

From your advice I think I'll look for some CCI Standard - do you think it will cycle a moderated semi-auto ok?

All of this just to see how quiet my rifle is with a moderator! 8-)

It works in my G22 (now after some fettling) but not reliably in my 10/22; spose it depends on your particular rifle.

CCI standard runs fine in a moderated semi-auto.

CCI Standard has been fine in all my autoloaders. Ones that haven't worked so well are the Eley Subsonic HPs, and the Winchester ones of the same type - just not quite enough force to fully cycle reliably.

I use CCI HP Subs and find it head and shoulders above the likes of Blazer. It also has legs and comfortably works for me at distance.

CCI standard is fine with my 10/22 12 inch volq barrel and SAK moderator.

Its also clean compared to some.
