Yep, spent many an hour in service areas spannering on rallies for several of the guys in my old motor club that ran Avengers.

Lucky guys having someone on the tools - was a while before I got that lucky!

Those lower axle links / spring pans at the back were a weakness until they got some bracing.

Here's us out practicing (from 1977) Jeeeez, I feel old now!

I well remember sleeping in the back of an old Transit along with a couple of bikes, freezing cold, and everything smelling/tasting of Castrol R. Snetterton, Brands, Lydden etc.

To be fair when disaster struck (usually in the shape of a tree or dry stane dyke)- there was always help from fellow competitors. Sharing spares, temporary windscreens, pipes and cables....

1066: happy days, I slept in the rally car a few times. Changing a gearbox after driving the car through gallons of liquid pig thanks to a wrong call from the ballast in the passenger seat: yeah that was fun........ !

Not to forget doing the same job in the rain, plagued by midgies. Why does gearbox oil smell like cat pee???

I was referring more to our motor club members helping out as service crew etc for others on events.

Back then, in our motor club, you couldn't be eligible for any end of year club award for driving/navigating unless you had marshalled or been involved in planning/organisation of at least two events, and been volunteer service crew for other club members on at least 2 events.

I dare say some may have done that but in my experience up north not that common.

It wasn't a rule in any of our clubs that you HAD to do ANY of the stuff you outlined thoiugh we used to marshal before we started competing.

I loved marshalling: we marshalled on the Burmah, Scottish, Mintex and others as well as club rallies back in the day.
