Which folding knife?

I have been casting an eye over knives and am surprised to see that there has been a real explosion of designs since I was in the Scouts.
Is there anywhere that lists what the various knife blade designs are ideal for?
I am looking for something that can handle jobs too big for my Gerber multi tool, but does not need to be so big that it can take down small trees. Cutting small branches and hide work Can be opened one handed, puncture car tyres and cut climbing rope and seat belts. The blade should be lockable and the handle strong but as light as possible without losing strength.
Any ideas?

This is my general knife; A SwissArmy Forrester; a good robust knife of a handy size. The blade locks which may put it into the 'too dangerous' bracket! I'm not a forrester by the way but I carry it as a Scout leader.

I had one of these for a while, the saw blade is excellent and goes through a good sized bow very quickly. My preference is one of the Wilkinson folding hand saws, excellent bits of gear and the cheap ones are, erm.. cheap

with a folding knife, can you carry them all the time (presuming they arent lockable). would you ever get in to any bother carrying one?
Theres always a good use for a knife, and they come in handy at the oddest of times, but I dont know the legal ramifications of carrying one out and about?

I get confused with the various legal opinions but I'm prepared to argue that a Scout leader, in uniform, performing his Scouting role, is sufficiently good reason for having just about any type of blade in his possesion short of a sword...
and when I think about it there are some Scouts for whom a sword might be a very useful tool

There is a plethora of knifed out there, some good, some outstanding and an awful lot atrocious!! And this is one area where you really do get what you pay for.
Spyderco Military or Paramilitary with either a full or part serrated blade. Best steel available, almost indestructible G10 handle, one hand opening and closing pocket/clothing clip. Not cheap but worth it. I've owned both models and highly recommend them.
