With the "Black Rilfe" project under way, I've been looking at loads for it. It has a 1 in 9" twist so will get a go at my already favourite load with 69gn SMKs and Vhit140, but I may be urinating in the wind in a Ruger Mini 14.....

So, whilst flicking through the Cast Bullet Manual for .32 Win Spl loads, I went to data for .223 Rem.... it may be interesting to try cast projectiles in it. Gas checked, you can achieve some pretty impressive velocities, relatively, and the loads use pretty fast powders which may be an advantage with an 18.5" barrel.

I'd have a look over on Cast Boolits Simon, there are a lot of chaps over their shooting cast (auto) out of their ARs.

You will need to take a bore and chamber slug though to select the correct boolit though.

They're getting cast boolits over 3500fps with accuracy. That takes some doing!

Done some 223 cast Boolits for my CZ 527 Carbine 1 in 12 twist a while back.

Got a Lyman 225646 mold which should cast a 55g Boolit with #2 Alloy (90% Lead 5% Tin 5% Antimony) . I used range lead which cast at 60.5g add a gas check (1.2g) and it came out at 62g. lubed with Lee Lube.

The results were rubbish unless I kept the velocities around rimfire level, in which case the results were similar to a Ruger 10/22.

I suppose the Boolit weight of 62g was too heavy to stabilize at high velocities and the bullet lube didn't help.

Your 1 in 9 twist maybe OK but the molds are around £100. Lee doesn't do one. All depends how much shooting you do.

Lyman also do a 44g 223 mold. Checkout their Catalog..... Here....

Accuracy and Mini 14 don'tgo together. Anything you can do to aid accuracy has to be tried.

Exactly...... but thankfully, dodgyrog has some cast .224 bullets in stock!
