The 1000yd .308....

We've a guy in our club who has been a member for a couple of years and is on his first FAC. He has former military reservist experience, but all in all, still a relative novice. He's been previously called out on some BS and now doesn't try to impress people, he just gets on.
A while ago he claimed that using his 24" Browning X-Bolt, PPU 175gn Match bullets, in front of Vhit N140 for a MV of 2450fps he gets sub MOA, 5 round groups at 1000yds, with boring regularity...
When these first claims came out I did not believe it. Since, as I said, he's a "more solid" sort of bloke who previously had a very traumatic time in his personal life, which is why such things from him were forgiven. But last Wednesday, he was repeating the same claim! PPU bullets, N140, 500 quid rifle, smashing the "1000 yard monster"!
Seriously, is such a recipe capable?!! If so, why am I paying nearly 50 quid a box for bullets and contemplating an eleven hundred quid re-barrel?

And yet people who know normally say Lapua 168 grain are only good to 600m in 308win.
We had a guy in our unit who frequently claimed that when he "had" an FAC he was able to be sub MOA with a .243 with 70 grain Nosler ballistic tips at 600m. We called him Rambo.
I think there is an issue here with claimed credibility from people who have served who have done an ACMT or less once a year.

If he said he was doing it with a Savage rifle I would believe him. :)

Sub MOA with a 243 at 600 - I'll go for that..
However, half MOA at 1000 with a 24" barrel and PPU 175 - now I'd really struggle with that one. Just plug the figures into any ballistics app to see that this will go trans sonic way before it ever gets anywhere near the target.

Absolutely not! Total bullsh****r. Why not accompany him on his next trip to the range?

Sim;
your guy is back to telling porkies again. As suggested, as him if you may accompany him on his next visit to the range where you can observe this world class display of shooting .... then be prepared for a variety of excuses as to why he can't make it!

Exactly what I thought
The Savage Model 12 LRP jumped into my head when I read SimG's post.

Are you sure you aren't thinking of the Sierra #2200 168? That is the bullet designed for 300m shooting that regularly has problems when used inappropriately at longer distances; I've never heard of problems with a Lapua 168 - in fact, I'm not even aware that there *is* a Lapua 168 .30 cal, the closest is a 167.

I've never shot a PPU bullet, but bullets don't have to be expensive to group well. I'm still working though quantities of Nosler .30 cals for which I paid 19p (a couple of years ago or so). They group as well or better than similar Sierras or Bergers costing double. They just ask you to be a bit more capable at reading the wind to exploit their good groups; but at that price you can shoot them enough and improve that proficiency. And what on earth kind of barrel costs £1100 fitted?!!!

Now if he was using an Asperley Aimless with Chimera bullets his claims would indeed be credible.
