A hypothetical question

#1 Post by ovenpaa »

A hypothetical question - a neighbour knocks on your door one night, they have been clearing out Great Uncle Freds garage and found a handful of live rounds, being a law abiding person and knowing you are a shooter they have done the 'right' thing, popped them in a bag and dropped them in your outstretched hand for you to 'do something' with them.

Closer inspection reveals half a dozen obscure wartime rounds of dubious origin, certainly not on your ticket so what do you do?

Throw them over the nearest hedge?
Take them to the Police station?
Advise your FEO and tell him you will pull them and throw the bits away?
Pop them on a shelf and look at them later?
Something else?

Remember, the calibre is not on your ticket so right now those rounds in your slightly sweaty palm are for all intents and purpose now illegal held.

So he has "supplied" and you are in "possession"?

I would suggest that he be given them back and told to phone the Police straight away. They work 24/7 so you have no excuse for not contacting them!
He either arranges to take them along to a Police station at the earliest opportunity or has someone come to his house and pick them up.
You are not allowed to destroy them, you have to hand them in.

Unofficially I would pull them asap and enjoy doing the research as to what they are etc..

I would say that this is a almost daily occurrence across the country, normally family or builders finding stuff granddad had hidden in the attic,

Pop em down to the nearest RFD who can get shut of them for you.

Confirmation: These cartridges, are they something boring like .22LR or .308? Or are they something really interesting like .577/450 Martini-Henry or MkVI .303?

Your answer will effect my answer ;)

They are hypothetical and can be anything that you choose. This question is based on my musings on the ride into work in the morning although a neighbour did prof up a very dodgy looking box .22LR a year or two ago, Christel happily fed them to her rifle which consumed them with relish.

I have just had a look for the legislation on this one but can not find it at the moment. I do remember something about this one being a trick question in the Police exams.

I think the trick is that if you find/confiscate drugs, you can destroy them or take them to someone legally entitled to possess them, ie Doctor, Chemist or Police at the earliest opportunity.
The catch being that with Firearms you must take them to a Police Station/Officer.

Perhaps one of the other lads can remind me.

I have to admit that if something exotic came my way I would do my best to phone my friendly RFD and find out if we could keep it "civilian" as we all know the Police will only destroy it.

Not in my town.Crime apparently stops being committed at 4.00pm because they lock the door and go home.

As for the original question.I'd pull the rounds straight away if i didnt have that calibre on my ticket. ;)

Accept the rounds and put them in your gunsafe with the rest of your ammunition. Telephone your Firearms Officer as soon as possible (or e-mail).

He will tell you that you did the right thing - keeping them 'off the street' but to take them to the nearest Police Station for their disposal.

Here's another one for you:

You are last out of your range and you notice that someone has left a rifle in a slip. You don't know who it belongs to - you are not an RFD, there's no one else about. What do you do?
