Theresa May, the Home Secretary, was accused last night of resisting calls to tighten gun laws following the shooting spree of Derrick Bird in which 12 people were murdered.

A report by MPs more than seven months ago denounced the legislation in England and Wales as a "complex and confused" mess and condemned the loopholes that allowed convicted criminals to acquire firearms legally.

The MPs called for one licensing system to cover all guns, replacing the 34 pieces of legislation currently governing possession of firearms and said the ban on ownership should be extended to cover people with a suspended jail sentence.

They also backed an overhaul of the age limits on gun use and suggested police should be required to consult licence applicants' partners before deciding whether they should be granted.

A Home Office spokesman said: "We are carefully considering the recommendations made by the home affairs select committee and will report back shortly."

No mention about those who acquire firearms ILLEGALLY of course...So Bird went nuts, so fcking what. It happened, it was responded to as best we could given we are a disarmed nation.

If we HAD guns maybe he would not have shot so many people, not that the Independent like the thought of people NOT being victims.

The thing is, given the recommendations of the HAC, apart from the bringing legislation under one Act, barring criminals with suspended sentences and those that have served any prison sentence, recommendations may very well se a relaxing of certain parts of legislation.....

Perhaps all those mentioned in Morris' article need to be careful what the wish for....

The big worry is the feckin mess they will make of a new Firearms Act ...it will keep BASC and its QCs in business for years to come and guess who will get the worst of it?

Think about it!!

If they move Shotguns to Sec1. Shotgun sales and ownership will be decimated, causing many dealers to shutdown and Firearm Departments to have a field day with Good Reason.

Not only that...a few shotgun only shooters (those with crim records) may loose their tickets ...maybe those with s1 semis will loose FAC.
