A couple of questions.
I might of asked these questions before so be patient with me.
I know nothing about F class and I have never been to Diggle.
I have a Steyr SSG P1 in .308 with a Khales scope Harris bipod two ten round mags etc.
Can I shoot F class with this rifle I would probably be using a 155g bullit with one of Vitavouri,s powders.
If so how would I arrange to come down to Diggle and have a go I will need some help because this is brand new to me I normally shoot milsurps just for the fun of it.
I have worn out one set of eyes and now have a new plastic set that I can see for miles with and I am keen to put them to the test.

What length of barrel is on your Steyr?
Also check out the GB F class league web site for weight regs etc.

The basic regs for F-TR is any rifle chambered in .308 or .223, max weight including scope and fixed bipod is 8.25Kg/18lb 2oz.

The biggest issue with Standard .308 set ups (1/12 twist, 24/26 inch) is that you struggle to keep supersonic out to 1000 yards particularly with the 155gn bullets.

Most folk fit longer barrels (30/32 inch) to get the velocities up to around 3000 fps, I went the another way and rebarreled with a 32 inch 1/10 barrel and shoot 200 grn SMK's which stay supersonic out to 1200.

TBH it's a lot of fun and worth coming and having a go, it's probably one of the friendliest disciplines I've been involved with.

I would say it was a very good rifle to have a go at F/TR with the 155 Scenar, pop some N140/540 behind it and go for it. I shoot .308 with 24" barrel and 155's with a 16X 'scope to 1000 yards quite happily. F/TR has become an arms race with competitors using every trick available to them and probably rightly so however I strongly believe rifles such as yours and my AE should be placed on a level footing with rifles of a similar ilk and the introduction of a third class for factory black guns with capped barrel lengths and 'scope magnification would be a welcome addition in my eyes. Call it F Black/F Tack/F Standard or whatever and I would enter in the blink of an eye.

Alpha1 - please come and shoot at Diggle. There is an F Class 'practice' shoot on Sunday 28th August - in other words, not a 'serious' comp. and will be ideal for your first foray into F Class. Be there for about 10.00am. Postcode for your satnav is OL3 5SP

There is a GBFCA League shoot on August 6/7th but the entry is full and anyway, I wouldn't really recommend a League shoot for your first comp.

The next League shoot at Diggle is in September - you might want to try that one if you enjoy the experience.

At this stage don't get bogged-down with equipment, barrel-lengths bullets etc. Just bring your rifle, 25 rounds, a scope and bi-pod.

Strangely enough, the Yanks argued about this for weeks on their Long Range forum - might still be arguing for all I know. Problem is, everyone agreed in principal but they couldn't agree the rules:

Should it be magazine feed?
Should there be a scope power limit?
Should it be restricted to a Harris bi-pod?
Should there be a max barrel-length/profile?
308 only or any calibre?
Maximum all up weight?
Can the stock be modified to ride a back-bag?

Tactical rifles are absolutely fine for getting into F Class but, if you create another class, someone will only see it as another opportunity to win and build the ultimate F Class tactical rifle, stretching the rules in every direction. The rules are fine as they are.

For the record, the Diggle F Class Open Championship (shot at all ranges from 300 - 1000 yds and with many GBFCA League shooters competing) was won last year by Paul Harper shooting a Remington tactical rifle with McMillan M40 stock. But, Paul can shoot - he won the Imperial McQueen this year with the same rifle! Something about 'nut behind the butt' comes to mind.
