My new lead melting pot.

Last year I got a new 40lb bottom pouring lead furnace from Stephan (sandman15) in Germany which was a real buy and has being making excellent bullets for me ever since, see my previous posts.

I have been ladle dipping from a PID controlled Lyman 10 lb pot, I like to have the temperatures in my casting process as consistent as possible (melting pots run trough PIDs and thermometer fitted moulds), being only 10lb capacity the Lyman has its limitations, so I have been looking at larger capacity dipping pots, RCBS have just released their new Easy Melt with built in PID at 25lbs capacity which I am looking to try and acquire an example of. However I also thought I'd see if Stephan did such things so a couple of emails later and this 40lb PID controlled beauty is on order.

Delivery should be middle of next month as he will need to get a Fahrenheit PID in for me.

Pwoarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I have been lucky over the years in getting a good lead supply and had the foresight to build up a goodly reserve.

I also do buy foundry alloy and elements like pure lead, tin, copper and antimony so that I have a bit more control and exactitude over my alloys when needed, I also stocked up on quiet a few tons each of lino and mono type along with foundry type (copper bearing) when the printing industry went into extinction and they were ditching unused ingots so I am pretty well stocked and always take suitable alloy whenever I can get it. Plumbers, roofers and demolition people are always worth cultivating I was also an avid wheel weight collector back in the day when they were the perfect bullet alloy and have tons of them waiting to be cleaned and processed when needed.

The beauty of this pot is that it is big enough to take my 2lb Rowel, a four cavity Pritchett mould for example literally eats lead but with a proper sized ladle you can fill the cavities at one go and still have enough left in the ladle to keep the temperature during the pour. I will only be casting half the pot at a session 20lbs at a time is enough for me nowadays.

Very nice, the PID in the image looks to be exactly the same as I have just purchased from Thermosense here in the UK, they are certainly a cut above the 25 quid eBlag offerings

Most PID controllers I have used can be set to display in either Fahrenheit or Centigrade

Not the ones Stephan uses, see my previous thread on his bottom pour 40lb pot.
