Savage F and/or FT/R in .308 Modertaor

#1 Post by Plecotus »

Hi,

Does anyone know if it's possible to fit a moderator to either of the above? I'm not so much concerned about recoil but my home range is in a railway tunnel and helping to keep the noise down would be a good move.

Cheers,

Denis

If you get a decent gunsmith to thread the muzzle for you, certainly.

You would need a variation to buy a moderator of course.

That's good to know - thank you. I have no previous experience of moderators so apologies if it was a dumb question. Would you have any idea what this would be likely to cost?

Best wishes,

Not a dumb question at all, we were all inexperienced in some aspect of shooting or other once.

How much is a bit of a tough question to answer, best to find someone local through personal recommendation, failing that Mike Norris does a good job and is good value.

Hopefully someone more local to you will chime in.

I had a look on Mike Norris' web site and it seems they can do it for £90+VAT so that's a good steer (http://www.brockandnorris.co.uk/services/barrel-work) . I can ask around the club for a local recommendation if no-one on here is able to make a suggesttion but that lets me know the sort of money I'm looking at. I do sometimes work in that area so, it might be possible to drop it off and collect it later the same day by arrangement if I can't find someone more local.

Thanks again,

Denis

When having a barrel threaded for a moderator it is always best to leave the rifle and the moderator to be fitted with your chosen gunsmith to ensure proper alignment and fitting.

That makes a lot of sense - I presume, once fitted, it should then be left in place rather than removed and re-fitted to fit bags etc? If that's the case, I'm going to need a very long bag I thinkk!

You should be able to remove and replace a properly fitted moderator with no issues, moderators and crowns need cleaning.

I wouldn't leave a moderator on the barrel. After shooting you should remove it and clean the threads and crown, otherwise these can rust, and in extreme cases they can actually seize onto the barrel. This was discussed recently on here, where a member had a moderator seized onto the barrel. You need to ensure there is no moisture left in a moderator after use.

Once you've got the barrel threaded and a moderator installed, you could put a small sharpie "witness mark" on the barrel and the moderator, so that you can tighten the moderator with the same force everytime you remove and re-install it. Just simply line the marks up when you screw it back on.

Thanks both. I've learned a lot on here in just 24 hours. Another hobby of mine is model engineering so I completely understand the concept of a 'witness mark'. I'll take a look at the thread about the seized moderator. Will make a change to learn from someone else's misfortune for one :D

Cheers,

Denis
