Hi all after buying some RCBS branded unformed .43 Spanish cases I need to trim these quite a bit. The bases are too thick for my Redding trimmer and I'll need a custom pilot anyway.
I've been looking for an excuse to buy a mini lathe for a while so after looking can anyone recommend one suitable. I've looked at a variety of Warco and various re-branded ones on ebay but keep on looking at the next model up and it seems easy to reach the £700 plus bracket. I gather metal gears is a bit of a must on these.
Any recommendations as to something suitable for this and general use ?
Thanks
Mike

What is your budget and what are you going to use it for. Are you only going to use it for case prep or will you want to do machining work.
I have been there wore the T shirt I bought a small cheap Chinese lathe. I quickly realized it was not going to do what I wanted.
I was lucky I had machinists I could talk to at work and ask advice from. They took me under there wing and at 66 years old Im probably the oldest apprentice in Town.
I currently have two lathes a very much modified Chinese jobby that bears no resemblance to its original set up. A Myford ML10 that is great for screw cutting and all jobs case prep orientated. I have added a MILL to my set up.
This week I gave a list of slot drills and end mill cutters to my Boss to order from RS so I could machine bits for a project at work because I,m cheaper than a local machining company.
My point is look ahead dont just buy cheap you never know were your hobby could take you.
I would suggest you look for a Myford ML10 it will do every thing you want if its only case prep.
Have a look at these guys they are a family firm and great to do business with. Give them a ring and ask there advice.

Re: Recomend a mini lathe for case trimming pilot making
Thanks Alpha1
This is exactly the sort of advice I was after, I would like to think I could use it for other tasks, I'd like to believe I could learn to do things such as make a replacement screw for my old Mauser M71/84 or a cleaning rod for a Rolling block so perhaps the Myford is the way forward, I remember them from school they seemed indestructible. I'll give those guys a try, budget wise £500-£1000 is what I was thinking so hopefully I can start with the basics learn some new skills and as you say who knows where it will take me.
Thanks
Mike
