It depends on the rifle. Some .303s seem happier with PPU than others. Buy a box and try them is the easiest way to find out. Also, accurate compared with ????

i am trying to decide weather to buy or better to build your own, ie using cast and gas checks etc
used the ppu and seem ok,should cast be bigger 312 /314 174 -200grn

PPU 174gr FMJ shot fine from my No4 Mk1. It was capable at hitting Fig11 targets out to ~600m give or take. I didn't test it on paper at 100m. I found that acceptable. I use the fired brass for reloading.

Although factory Sellier and Bellot 180gr FMJ shoot very well (better than PPU I would say) their brass isn't the best. It's quite thin and brittle and does break after a few reloads, even when I neck sized only and used a modest charge.

Buy the PPU, shoot it and see how you get on, if you then want to reload you can use your fired cases. Win win!

Hi Chris

no experience of cast, but unless you are pretty slap-dash with reloading, you will be able to create more consistent ammo. By working your load up you can find the charge which works best with your rifle. Even something as simple as batching the cases and bullets will pay off.

I use them in 4 of my rifles, SMLE, No5, Mosin Nagant and Arisaka Type 99 and they all shoot well enough.

I found the PPU perfectly OK in a Long Lee an SMLE and a No4 I have. The brass is good for reloading. BUT and it's a BIG BUT. All rifles are different so buy some and see.

Last year I bought a big batch of PPU, 400 rds, and have used it in both No.5 and 4T, but I had an issue when using the No.5 one shoot with one 20 rd box, where the rim of every round in the box seemed to be too think, with the extractor not being able to grab the rim.
One of the other club members had a box of S&B, and the extractor on his No.4 seemed to work with the rds in my box of PPU, so we swapped ammo for that session, and the S&B worked a treat in the No.5.

Not had the issue with any other box so far with the PPU in the No.5, but the No.5 did seem better with the S&B to the PPU, so I will probably pick up half a dozen boxes of S&B soon and do a side by side test between the PPU and S&B in both No.5 and 4T.

Shame we only have a choice between these too for factory ammo.
