Scope for Gallery Rifle Centerfire - Open Division

Hi guys,

I was hoping to pick your brains as to what type of scopes are prevalent in Gallery Rifle Centerfire competition - more specifically in the Open Division?

From the material available on the Gallery Rifle webpage, I gather that higher magnification scopes (variables maxing out at around x20) seem a popular choice in Small Bore Division, but I haven't been able to find anything as definitive for Centerfire. And even less so for Open. What I have read, is that something in the x3-9 range might be preferable - it would be great if any competitors could give me their opinions.

For context, I have been considering an Aimpoint red dot with a flip-to-side x3 magnifier - but am unsure as to it's suitability. Particularly for competitions ranging to 50m.

Cheers,

Adam

Personally, both my Gallery Rifles (10/22 and Marlin 1894CS) have 3-9x40 scopes on... (saying that, I'm by no means a "top shot", so I'm not sure how relevant my opinion is....)

I find x9 is good for 25-50m, then turn the mag down as you get closer... at 10m I'll be down at x3.

It really is personal choice for most types of match.

Personally, I prefer a non-magnifying red dot for anything which needs fast target acquisition, as long as the scoring rings aren't really small. If you want one scope to cover all situations, I'd go for something which goes down to 1x mag. Anything over 10x is going to be too much.

An Aimpoint with 3x magnifier might work. I've played around with that set-up a bit, but eye relief can be an issue with those magnifiers.

At the end of the day, the only way to be sure what works for you is to go to the range with a few different options and shoot the courses of fire you intend to use them with.

Thank you for your feedback Daryll and JSC - it's appreciated. I'll be at Isle Targets on Sunday Daryll - perhaps we could have a chat about the subject then if you're going? I'll be shooting a Noveske AR15; make sure to say hello.

Cheers.
