Parker Hale has lost accuracy

I have a PH .308 with a Mauser action,I think its a 1100 deluxe.
I used it the other day and the accuracy could have been a lot better.
On checking it out I found the screw in front of the magazine very loose.
Does anybody know how tight it should be as it pulls the barrel down?
Thanks
Tony

Go and have a look at www.milsurps.com Get into the Lee Enfield section and look for the Parker Hale subsection https://www.milsurps.com/forumdisplay.php?f=157
They should be able to help. Initially I would say hand tight but ask them.

From what I've read, it essentially comes down to the fixings that are in use. Essentially you want hand tighten as strong as possible without stretching the threads.

Repeatable Torque numbers are often used on custom and modern actions to provide a consistency so that the point of zero does not move from removing to replacing. Often these values will be within the spec of the fixings that have been used.

Be careful as you can certainly over tighten the action screws on Mauser rifles and this is why many of them have a second locking screw that indexes with the main screw. I personally would not go any tighter than 65 in/lbs (7,3Nm) and would expect the optimal tightness to be closer to half this. I would suggest dropping the barrel action out and make sure the bedding areas are clean and dry and then tighten both screws to not much more than hand tight and shoot a group, measure and repeat and look for a point where the group starts to tighten. If the rifle is not fitted with locking screws you can use a centre punch to flare the edge of the screw slightly against the guard to act as a locking mechanism.
