So, F Class, what's it all about then?

Up to now my rifle shooting has been confined to Service (Lee Enfield's) and Target Rifle. I've just joined a club that is heavily into F Class and, while I'm happy to plod on with TR, I'm thinking it might be interesting to add another string to my bow. It also appeals as my 15 year old is shooting with me and, while he's determined to get to grips with my No. 4, its nice if he can get a few V bulls now and again.

My question is about what sort of kit would I need? What considerations are there re calibre? Not going to rush out and spend but just interested in knowing a bit more before I start talking to the guys in the Club.

Bloody hell! You've just started what's to become a monster thread! I can feel it in my water.....
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!

Right in order to correct any grievence I have caused :lol:

Distances shot are from 500-1200 yards depending on the event, so a longer barrel will help to help generate the velocities required, but many turn up with fairly standard rifles and have a go ;)

You can enter the F-TR side with any rifle chambered in either .223/5.56 or .308/7.62x51 a fixed bi-pod and a scope.
Max all up weight for F-TR is 8.25Kg or 18lb 2oz.

my set up is
Remington 700 action
32 inch 1/10 twist barrel
Sightron 10-50x50 1/8 MOA adjustable scope
Modified Sinclair bi-pod

F-open is a different kettle of fish, any calibre up to 8mm, most people are shooting some form of 7mm or 6.5.
the front rests are adjustable benchrest type affairs

It looks like people are still undecided on bullet weights in .308 - some are driving 155's at over 3000fps and others are using heavier bullets. the 185 Berger VLD's work with a 1:12 twist as do 155's so that is a handy twist if you wish to try both.

The good news is you can enter an F/TR class match with a factory .308 or .223 to see if you like it and there are many opportunities to shoot these at Imperial next month.
