Hello
I have two obslete caliber rifles,at present they are just for show on the front room wall.
Iwould like to try to get one proofed and if it is ok to put it on my FAC, buy sutable ammunition and shoot it.
As both rifles are the same caliber would they both have to bo put on my FAC put in a safe etc, even though i only will be shooting the one i have had proofed??
Thanks @nd

If you can buy suitable ammunition then it is not an obsolete calibre firearm.

I would be wary of having them proofed.

buy or reload? if they are for example Swiss 7.5x53.5 then its not a great problem to reload 7.5x55 cases to suit, agreed on proofing do you need to?

The OP specifically said "buy sutable ammunition and shoot it".

Nothing about buying suitable components and handloading.

Hi Dromia
Sorry should have said, they are of a caliber that the components to reload for are readily avaliable.(.577)
i would get them fully inspected first before doing anything and if advised against shooting either then they remain wall hangers.
The idea to proof for black powder was for safety and my piece of mind.
Would both have to go on my FAC?

If they are in sound condition then they will be fine, they will probably have original proof marks on them, no need to subject nice old guns to the proof house vandalism. The only thing proof means is that it took an overpressure round at that time. With older guns I would be more worried about their safety after visiting the proof house than before.

You should only need to put the one you are shooting on you FAC. Obviously if you shoot the wrong one you will have committed a firearms offence.

Thanks for the reply.
I was worried i would loose two slots on my ticket but only use one rifle.
Now it's time to look for a proof mark and put in a variation.
No chance of a mistake, one will go in the safe the other is 8ft up the wall.
Thanks

Pretty straightforward..the Home Office guidance indicates that obsolete calibre guns may come and go on your FAC.
I had a Marlin in 32/40 on my FAC.....shooting deteriorated so I had a one for one variation with a later Winchester in same calibre. The Marlin went into a cupboard and the Winchester left a cupboard and went into my secure cabinet...you obviously need to ask for a suitable quantity of the obsolete calibre ammo on your FAC. Not only is the ammo for 32/40 not available, the brass is very hard to find. 30/30 cases can be fettled to fit, also 32 Special cases if you can find them.
I did have some difficulty in explaining to my FEO whaI I was doing since he had not dealt with a swap case before. Bone up on the Home Office guidance.

thank you for your input, I would direct your attention to your first reply
"If you can buy suitable ammunition then it is not an obsolete calibre firearm."
As he was positive it was an obsolete calibre then a question to determine that fact was valid .
The OP has now confirmed he is considering reloading and buying components not ammo.

Just one note of advice, if you do get the rifle/s reproofed, aks the proof house to supply proof house certificate and NOT to have the rifle stamped. Two reasons firstly you lose the obsolete value and secondly it stays as fac.
I have had that experience in the past.
