Things are quiet at work at the moment so I thought I would take the opportunity to have a play with our Sonic bath. Its an Industrial unit not your Aldi Special.
I decided to drill and tap some cases for my cartridge over all length gauge. The idea was to clean the cases in the bath then drill and tap.
I bunged them in the bath with Demin water and added a cleaning solution. The results were terrible I ended up chucking the cases.
I managed to salvage one case. Ok I thought its a start. I managed to ruin the one and only case because I did not have the correct size drill and the tap jammed in the case. What a disappointing day. Hope to morrow is more rewarding. I have ordered the correct size stub drills for over night delivery.

if you didn't have the right size drill, did you at least check it on one of the cases you were binning, before attempting your only good case?

David have you ever considered that perhaps shooting and its attendant pastimes are not really suited to your particular quintessence.

Why did you chuck the cases after washing? Would could have gone wrong so badly with the wash?

A1 send them to me, I will bung them through the LEM Stainless cleaner and drill and tap - all part of the service.

Forgot to add, I use a 7mm HSS drill for brass cases, the important thing is to put a generous 15 degree chamfer on the mouth of the hole so you do not leave any burrs after tapping.

I used a 7mm drill. I have ordered a 7.25 mm. There was a burr on the case after tapping I had to clean it up so it would sit properly on the gauge. A slight champher sounds like the way to go it was just a quick check to make sure I had the right thread. The shooting sheds over all lentgh gauge is a thing of beuty by the way. It is built to last a life time. I am well impressed every serious shooter should have one on his reloading bench.
In the mean time my Hornady gauge has been confined to the bin. I will probably give it to the probationary member I have been mentoring.
(Actually I have just made him a full member so he is not a probationer any more)
I will just pop the cases in my tumbler. Tumblers are just fine for my needs.

But, it would be a much duller place without him! I actually look forward to his "WTF has he done now....?!"

I use one of these, a Noga deburring tool, run a diamond file along the cutting edge first off or it will chatter on brass.
