A FAMAS in 222 (civilian version produced at less than 1,000 units) will sell for € 3K in France .
USD 23K is totally absurd unless you have the bank account of an Texan petrol king who fancies being the only one at the range with a FAMAS … It will soon be replace by the HK 416 , so God knows what will happen to the French army stocks. If it follows the pattern of the MAS 45 & the MAS 49/56, many FAMAS will soon be for sale in the US for the weight of the metal, with a clause of non-return, so people like me who already paid them with their taxes, will not be able to import some back

Is it still the case in France that "Non-Military" Calibers like 222 require less paperwork and are easier to own than say 223?

On what basis? LMT couldn't supply a modern Western Military. It took them five years to supply the UK with 3000 L129s. They supplied the NZ navy with their CQB .223, but then the NZ navy has a strength of around 2000 regulars and 500 reservists. And not every sailor gets a rifle!

There are few companies today that have the ability to rearm a military. In the West, most state arsenals and production facilities have gone. It's probably fair to say that any major replacement of a western battle rifle will come from HK, FN or Dimarco. If someone was feeling bold, perhaps Daewoo could as well. Fact is, little companies can't.

Weight and cost probably would be a factor for an infantry rifle. The Lmt is heavy and expensive.
