What is a good set of two way radios that wont cost a fortune?
Probably only need about half a mile or so.

We use a pair of Mitex "General " UHF (5watt) for range use and they work well and batteries last all day long. About £150/pair.

Oh, forgot; license required to operate them (officially).

Baofeng BF-888s. About 40 quid for 5 radios, charging bases and a programming disc.

I used them comfortably out in the desert, left one in a box for 2 and a half years switched off before discovering it again and it still had 2 days worth of being switched on in it. Good clarity and small.

Need a license officially. But you do for anything that isn't PMR, then Motorola XtN446 are very good, if a bit of a pain to programme on the go, but that wouldn't be a problem for club range radios.

Trouble with using high power radios without licence or training is you may be interfering with those that do have a licence.

Very true, licenses are only around 60 quid for 3 years. Easily absorbed by a club.

I have a pair of radios bought in 2001 from Lidl of all places, perfectly reliable, worked recently out to around 2,000 yards through woodland and hilly terrain at Cawdor rifle range, perfectly adequate for range and similar use. Similar one has been on sale reltively recently for under £50/pair.

I have a pair of Motorola PMR radios that give me a couple of kilometres in open country, I did test them once in an urban area and got about a kilometre before losing contact,
