Timney Calvin Elite 2-stage Trigger

#1 Post by WelshShooter »

I currently have a Remington 700 in 6.5x47 Lapua with a standard X Mark Pro trigger on there. It's a decent enough trigger, but nothing special. This weekend I got to have a blast with an AI AT 308 which has a 2-stage trigger. This is the first time I've shot a rifle with a good two stage trigger and to be honest I much prefer this to a single stage trigger. I've been toying with the idea of buying an aftermarket trigger for my Remmy but I'm now looking at a 2-stage trigger instead.

I came across the Timney Calvin Elite 2-stage trigger shown below. I've read some conflicting reports of this trigger and most of them seem to stem around the lack of basic instructions for setting the amount of creep and overtravel. The remaining comments seem positive once this has been achieved. I've not managed to find any similarly priced 2-stage triggers in the UK.

Anybody have experience with the below 2-stage trigger? Are there any other triggers I should be aware of?

I've got one. Easy to set up but I took the first stage out as I like single stage. I managed to set it at 9oz safely. Its a better trigger than most but not as good a Jewel IMO

You got a link to one for sale? So far my searching has only turned up discussion of a prototype and no two-stage triggers for sale, just the single stage.

Daft question, but why didn't you get the single stage version?

I did but took the first stage out. I like to shoot when I touch the trigger not after I've moved it. Personal choice

So I went ahead and ordered the trigger. I received it yesterday and fitted to my rifle which took ten minutes including the removal of my rifle from the chassis. However, when I tried the trigger out I couldn't feel the first stage, only the second stage. The trigger arrived at 8oz first stage, 16oz second stage which is quite light compared to the >2lb trigger pulls I have on my current rifles. The written instructions provided state not to touch the sear engagement screw (rear of trigger) and that you can adjust trigger pull with the front screw on the bottom. So I tried adjusting the trigger pull screw but that only seemed to change the second stage, no effect on the first stage. I sent an e-mail to Timney tech support to try and resolve the issue.

Surprisingly, the instructions are wrong because the sear engagement screw isn't as per the supplied diagram, it's actually the front top screw. The rear screw adjusts the first stage trigger pull and the front bottom screw adjusts the second stage trigger pull.

You can only adjust the first and second stage so far. My trigger pull gauge hasn't arrived yet so it's currently set up on "feel" compared to other triggers that I used. The first stage can only be adjusted so much until the transition to the second stage feels "gritty" so I just backed off a small amount until I met the solid "wall" of the second stage. The second stage only requires a slightly higher amount of force until it breaks nice and clean.

All that's left now is to try it out at the range!

It's a shame such a nice trigger is let down by the poor instructions. Hopefully, others who are in the same predicament to me can find this post and will help them out.

Mine came with no instructions at all, I looked it up on the internet. It did come with some religious nonsense though. I adjusted the sear engagement first by turning the screw until it fired then turning it back 1/4 of a turn. Then took out all of the first stage and finally adjusted the pull weight. Not sure what you mean about you can only adjust first and second stage so far?
Was yours a gold or blue unit (not that I know the difference)
